In a press release issued earlier today, Jaguar made the announcement that it will once again compete on the global motorsport stage. The automaker will enter its own team in the FIA Formula E Championship, which will begin in August, 2016. FIA Formula E is a single-seater electric car championship, and it is the first of its kind.

According to Jaguar Team Director, James Barclay, the company looked at alternate ways to return to racing. However, considering Jaguars plans for the future of electric vehicles, Formula E made the most sense.

"Electric vehicles will absolutely play a role in Jaguar Land Rover's future product portfolio and Formula E will give us a unique opportunity to further our development of electrification technologies," said Nick Rogers, Group Engineering Director for Jaguar. "The Championship will enable us to engineer and test our advanced technologies under extreme performance conditions."

More details will be made public as the season approaches.
